Excerpt: Essie's Roses, Michelle Muriel
"Pine needles and sweet jasmine filled the air. I wanted to wake Essie; she was missing all the firsts: the first smell, the first breath. But I suspected she was doing exactly what she wanted so I let her be. Her presence made my gazing special because I was not alone.
Hundreds of trees stood before me, and when the soft breeze blew, a chorus of leaves echoed across the valley. Their song sounded like the thankful applause an audience gave to a great performer on the stage. I pretended it was me, listening until the curtain fell.
Many of the tree’s branches intertwined embracing like lovers, locked, growing together forever—my favorites. A hierarchy existed among the trees. The young ones, thin, barely budding lined up as children; the established trees stood behind. Their overgrowth shielded the saplings from the sun as my mother did me.
I imagined autumn here, when no words could describe the colors of the hills. At their peak, the colorful trees glistened like Mr. Meek’s rock candy: lemon, orange, and cherry, lined up in glass jars placed on the edge of his counter enticing children and annoying mothers. Essie’s favorites were the tricolor trees. Red, orange, and yellow all displayed in one tree, as if its leaves couldn’t make up their mind what color to wear." -Excerpt Essie's Roses by Michelle Muriel
There is something so captivating about the fall. I love the cool air, the colors, and the quiet. It can also be the start of a very busy holiday season! I cannot believe summer is over. Welcome, fall!
Take a Little Time to Rest
I hope in the next few weeks you can take some quiet time to enjoy the splendor of fall. Sometimes it's a matter of giving ourselves permission to turn off the world and rest.
My dad used to call me his little tornado because I was always in a whirlwind doing something. I figured if I didn’t do it, no one else will. That may be the case, but we still need rest.
Even if I am not physically doing something, my mind is always working. But this little tornado finally fizzled out. My health dictated: I must give myself permission to rest. Do you do this? Banish guilt, quiet your mind, and give yourself permission to rest. It’s waiting for you.
